17 awesome cat books

by

Here’s an eclectic list of 17 awesome cat books (click on the cover images to purchase a copy).

In compiling this list, I’ve left aside the various cat-related mysteries by both Rita Mae Brown and Lilian Jackson Braun, the Warriors series, and the many “cozy mysteries” with cats on the cover and/or in the story.

The 17 books shown here (in alpha order) range from children’s books and collections of short stories to poetry, history, and philosophy … plus: photo books; a short novel that features an impressively realistic-sounding feline narrator; and two of my favorite novels, which happen to feature prominent cat characters.

If you, too, are a devotee of cat books, I hope you’ll find at least one title on this list to fall in love with.

Disclosure: If you follow one of my links to Bookshop.org — and if you buy a book from my storefront on the site — I receive a small percentage of the sale, at no extra cost to you. And a percentage of the sale is also added to the pool of funds that Bookshop.org distributes among independent brick-and-mortar bookstores. (As of Dec. 2020, less than a year since the website launched, that earnings pool already totals more than $10 million!)

Carlos Ruiz Zafón

“When I … looked round at the familiar bookshelves, and could hear no sounds but sounds of peace, and knew that here I might read or dream or idle exactly as I chose with never a creature to disturb me, how grateful I felt to the kindly Fate that has brought me here and given me a heart to understand my own blessedness.”
