book “review”: The Night Circus

by

I don’t believe in “must-read” book lists — or in book reviews, per se — but I do love to offer suggestions. This novel is one of many I’ve read and adored, and that (like all the others here) I’ve found to be particularly engrossing, magical, relaxing, and beautifully written. If you haven’t yet read this one but would like to add it to your to-be-read pile, you can purchase a copy at one of the links below.

Ready to get lost in an entirely original, magical tale?

The Night Circus is filled to the brim with mystery and magic and lush settings.

And there are even kittens.

Erin Morgenstern’s writing is, apparently, not everyone’s cup of tea. But if you, like me, are a visual person whose best thoughts and daydreams come to you as vivid movie reels, you may well adore this book as much as I do.

It’s so intensely visual — and the circus and its inhabitants are so *alive* — that it’s a magical place to get lost in for a few days.

And lest I forget to mention: in my opinion, the ending of this one was perfect. (For me, that’s always one of the keys to deciding how much I love a good book.)

Disclosure: If you follow one of my links to Bookshop.org — and if you buy a book from my storefront on the site — I receive a small percentage of the sale, at no extra cost to you. And a percentage of the sale is also added to the pool of funds that Bookshop.org distributes among independent brick-and-mortar bookstores. (As of Dec. 2020, less than a year since the website launched, that earnings pool already totals more than $10 million!)

Carlos Ruiz Zafón

“When I … looked round at the familiar bookshelves, and could hear no sounds but sounds of peace, and knew that here I might read or dream or idle exactly as I chose with never a creature to disturb me, how grateful I felt to the kindly Fate that has brought me here and given me a heart to understand my own blessedness.”
